Thanks to our martyrs
Olympic Champion Taha said “We had to be successful after July 15th” and added: “We wouldn’t travel to Rio if our citizens did not resist to tanks. We showed the world that Turkey is indestrucktible. My medal is for the memory of our martyrs.”

aha Akgül, who won Turkey's only gold medal in 2016 Rio Olympics, did not forget Democracy Martyrs of July 15th. National wrestler dedicated his success to people lost their lives during terrorist attacks and said "I dedicate this gold medal to martyrs that lost their lives in Van, Elazığ, Gaziantep and also to my fellow citizens who threw themselves in front of tanks, bullets. We would not be here if they did not save the country. We had to be successful after July 15th."
We are indestrucktible
"We had to represent our country very well. We had to show the world that Turkey can not fall to any attack of junta. Make everyone listen to our National Anthem in Olympics is the best publicity for Turkey. I had headaches becouse I was so focused until final game. 'If I will lose, it will be just because of this stress' I thought. Thanks God everything worked out. During the match, I could sense my opponent's fear from the way he breathed."
Erdoğan was first to congratulate
First person to congratulate Taha Akgül was President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. President Erdoğan reached to Taha Akgül via telephone and said "I am proud of you. Our country deserved that success." Our Olympic Champion said he was extremely happy after President called and added Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım also called and congratulated him.
