German side Bayern Munich show Roma no mercy in away match

German side Bayern Munich thrashed Italian team Roma 7-1 in the UEFA Champions League Group E match played at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday night.
Visitors Bayern Munich were off to a flying start when explosive Dutch winger Arjen Robben made a classy and curved shot into the far corner of the net, allowing Bayern to take an early lead in the 9th minute.
A minute later, home team Roma's Ivorian forward Gervinho attempted to score the equalizer -- but was denied by Germany's national goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer.
Four minutes later, Bayern's Polish striker Robert Lewandowski attempted to double the score, but Roma's Morgan De Sanctis saved the ball.
In the 23rd minute, the German side's attacking midfielder Mario Gotze doubled the gap by shooting outside of the penalty area after a neat one-two with his teammate, Thomas Muller.
Only two minutes later, Robert Lewandowski headed the ball whipped into him by his teammate Juan Bernat and found the net.
In the 30th minute, Robben made it 4-0. The Dutch star raced into the box and effortlessly placed the ball into the far corner. By this point, it was clear that Bayern were unstoppable.
Five minutes later, Roma's Greek centre-back Konstantinos Manolas handballed in the penalty area as he tried to block the cross -- but the ball struck his arm and the referee pointed to the penalty spot without hesitation.
Bayern Munich striker Muller successfully converted the penalty in the 36th minute, increasing the score to 5-0.
Roma were being ruthlessly torn apart in first half, while their German visitors started to enjoy their triumph.
In 54th minute of the play, Gervinho rattled the crossbar at close range. It was their best chance of the game thus far.
Six minutes later, Roma missed another great chance. Following Miralem Pjanic's free kick, Gervinho's effort was saved by Bayern's goalkeeper.
Finally, Roma scored in the 65th minute. Gervinho, assisted by Belgian midfielder Radja Nainggolan, headed the ball at close range to make the score 5-1.
In 78th minute, Bayern winger Franck Ribery chipped the ball over De Sanctins and found the net to make it 6-1.
The German side's Swiss winger, Xherdan Shaqiri, made it 7-1 with ten minutes to go, when he smashed the ball into the roof of the net at close range.
With this goal, the dust finally settled on the thrilling showdown in Rome.
Goals galore in Tuesday's games
Forty goals were scored in eight matches on Tuesday night -- a new record for a single UEFA Champions League match night.
